Golden Globes and Oscars: A Strong Correlation

Over the past nine years, the winners of the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature have mirrored the Oscar winners eight times. The only exception occurred in 2020 when the Golden Globes awarded Laika’s Missing Link, while the Academy honored Toy Story 4. This strong alignment underscores the significance of the Golden Globes as a predictor for the Oscars in the animation category.

This Year’s Best Animated Motion Picture Nominees

Here are the nominees vying for the Best Animated Motion Picture at the Golden Globes 2025:

  • Flow (Sideshow/Janus Films)
  • Inside Out 2 (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)
  • Memoir of a Snail (IFC Films)
  • Moana 2 (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)
  • Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (Netflix)
  • The Wild Robot (Universal Pictures)

The Golden Globes expanded their animated feature category to six nominations last year, and this year’s list continues that trend. The nominees include three major studio productions—The Wild Robot, Inside Out 2, and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl—alongside two indie favorites, Flow and Memoir of a Snail. The unexpected inclusion of Moana 2 has sparked discussions, as it hasn’t been widely recognized as the year’s top contender. This mirrors last year’s strategy, where the newly added slot was used to nominate Wish, suggesting a possible strategic or political motivation behind the selections.

Additional Nominations in New Categories

In addition to the Best Animated Feature category, two animated films—Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot—have been nominated for the newly introduced Cinematic and Box Office Achievement prize.

DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot has further distinguished itself with two additional nominations:

  • Best Original Score for Kris Bowers
  • Best Original Song for “Kiss the Sky”

The song, “Kiss the Sky,” features music and lyrics by Delacey, Jordan K. Johnson, Stefan Johnson, Maren Morris, Michael Pollack, and Ali Tamposi. With these nominations, The Wild Robot becomes the most nominated animated feature in Golden Globes history.

Director Chris Sanders’ Gratitude

In a heartfelt statement released this morning, Chris Sanders, the director and writer of The Wild Robot, expressed his gratitude:

“On behalf of the entire cast and crew of The Wild Robot, I wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the members of the Golden Globes, a group of people from all over the world, for their recognition of this story of a lost robot whose relentless kindness and compassion changes everything. Your four nominations for our film, incredible score, and song, mean so very much to everyone who lent their precious talents and time to a movie that struck out into uncharted territory. For all of us, it was the film of a lifetime.”
